Scallion Pancakes from Dumpling Wrappers
The viral hack: store-bought dumpling wrappers become layered, crispy scallion pancakes — no dough, no waiting.
The story
Real cong you bing means making dough and resting it. This viral shortcut stacks ready-made dumpling wrappers with oil and scallions instead — roll, pan-fry, and the layers puff into the real thing. Dumpling wrappers sit next to the tofu in almost every US supermarket.
Ingredients (5 + pantry staples)
- Dumpling wrappers — 12–15
- Scallions — 4, finely sliced
- Toasted sesame oil — 2 tbsp
- Salt — 1/2 tsp (counts here)
- Soy sauce + vinegar dip — optional
Pantry staples used (don't count toward the 6): cooking oil. Not stocked yet? See the pantry page.
Steps
- Brush a wrapper with sesame oil, sprinkle salt and scallions, top with another wrapper. Repeat 4–5 high.
- Roll the stack out gently to 8 inches; cut into strips, stack two strips, twist and roll into a spiral; roll flat again.
- Pan-fry in oil over medium heat 2–3 minutes per side until deep gold and flaky. Dip and eat.
Swaps
The same stack-roll-fry trick works with chili oil instead of scallions for a spicy spiral.
